Why do you think there is such a stigma associated with taking anti-depressants ? If you found yourself in an emotional black hole would you try to "pull yourself up by your bootstraps," or would you take an anti-depressant?
I would/have taken anti-depressants. The trick is while you are upset you can use it and at the same time take active measures to get yourself move on of the reason of depression like new involve yourself in new hobbies that you enjoy etc. there will soon be a time that you won't need antidepressant. that's the art of living in my humble opinion.

And don't forget that anti depressants are drugs too, imho, worse than marijuana. Weed can only help, Indica strain deals with depression.

As someone thats dealt with month long spouts of depression for the better part of a decade, I would smoke marijuana.
Anti-depressants are legal, sure, but you're not truly smiling, it's the drugs. Once you realize that, it becomes bitter sweet, resulting in... more depression.
