Not too long ago I tried to turn on my 80 gig iPod and a red circle with an "X" through it appeared. Having been a Mac user for years I knew that couldn’t be good. So like everyone does these days I "Googled" the issue and the only thing I found were rants from many irate iPod users, users who had the same problem – and users that had a good reason to be irate and ranting.
I attempted to put the iPod into disk mode as the apple.com site suggests – but the attempt is a futile one. Just for kicks I decided to take the iPod to the “Geniuses” at the nearby Mac store. I was told that Mac doesn’t fix iPods they only “swap” them out. For a mere $179.00 I could swap out my iPod for the same model. Keep in mind the price of the original iPod was $250.00. That’s a good deal isn’t it? I could swap out my two year old broken iPod for more than half of the original price in the hopes that it won’t happen to the new one. I could also keep it and have a very expensive paper weight. I could use it as a doorstop; hold a broken window up with it or use it as a coaster for my favorite beverage. It might not make a very good coaster though. Hey, come to think of it – it didn’t make a very good iPod either.
I used to be a die hard Mac fan - not so much anymore.
iPods are assembled in China by the way – related or not I found that fact to be interesting.
